seismik itu? Gelombang seismik merambatkan energi yang berasal dari patahan
lempeng di dalam bumi atau dari ledakan. Gelombang seismik dideteksi
menggunakan seismograf. Gelombang seismik dengan energy yang cukup besar dapat
mengakibatkan gempa bumi.
Ada beberapa
tipe gelombang seismik yang berbeda cara perambatannya, dua diantaranya adalah
gelombang bodi (body waves) dan gelombang permukaan (surface waves). Gelombang
bodi dapat merambat pada lapisan dalam bumi, tetapi gelombang permukaan hanya
dapat merambat di permukaan bumi seperti riak air. Sebuah gempa bumi
meradiasikan energi seismik baik pada gelombang bodi maupun gelombang
permukaan.

Dalam sebuah
gempa, gelombang bodi akan sampai lebih dulu di suatu lokasi daripada gelombang
permukaannya. Gelombang bodi memiliki frekuensi yang lebih tinggi daripada
gelombang permukaan. Meskipun datang belakangan, gelombang permukaanlah yang
banyak menyebabkan kerusakan di permukaan bumi.
Gelombang bodi
terbagi menjadi dua, yaitu gelombang P (primer) dan gelombang S (sekunder).
Gelombang P merupakan gelombang seismik tercepat, paling dulu sampai di lokasi
gempa. Gelombang P dapat merambat melalui batuan padat maupun zat cair.
Gelombang ini mendorong dan menarik medium yang dilewatinya sejajar dengan arah
rambatnya. Jadi, gelombang P merupakan gelombang longitudinal. Beberapa hewan
kadang dapat mendeteksi adanya gelombang ini.
Anjing,
misalnya, biasanya akan menggonggong dengan panik beberapa saat sebelum
terjadinya gempa bumi atau lebih tepatnya sebelum gelombang seismik permukaan
tiba.
Gelombang S
lebih lambat daripada gelombang P dan hanya dapat merambat melalui medium
padat, tidak bisa merambat melalui medium cair. Gelombang ini menggerakkan
batuan ke atas dank e bawah, tegak lurus perambatannya. Jadi, gelombang S
merupakan gelombang transversal.
Gelombang permukaan juga terbagi menjadi dua, yaitu gelombang Love dan gelombang Reyleigh. Istilah gelombang Love diambil dari nama matematikawan Inggris A.E.H. Love, sedangkan istilah gelombang Reyleigh diambil dari nama Lord Reyleigh yang meramalkan keberadaan gelombang ini secara teoretis. Gelombang love mengguncang tanah dalam arah menyamping menghasilkan gerak horizontal. Gelombang Reyleigh bergulung seperti gulungan ombak di lautan, mengguncang tanah ke atas dan ke bawah serta mendatar. Hampir seluruh guncangan yang terasa saat gempa bumi merupakan gelombang Reyleigh yang memang kadang jauh lebih besar daripada jenis gelombang seismik yang lain.
Kekuatan gempa
biasanya diukur dalam skala Richter yang ditemukan oleh Charles F. Richter pada
tahun 1934. Kekuatan gempa diperhitungkan berdasarkan gelombang seismik
terbesar yang terekam saat gempa terjadi tanpa memandang tipe gelombang seismik
mana yang terkuat.
